A+ Question of the Week

AplusQOW3Which of the following is true, regarding the default gateway setting for an IP host?

A. The default gateway is the IP address of the host’s exit interface.
B. The default gateway is the IP address of the switch to which the host connects.
C. The default gateway and the host must be in the same IP subnet.
D. The default gateway is also referred to as the subnet mask.

The correct answer is C.

The default gateway is the router that hosts on a subnet use to forward data to a remote network. If such a router were remote to the subnet, a device would have to use another router to route information to the default gateway, which makes no sense; the local router should be configured as that device’s default gateway.
