Ten More Cloud Computing Terms

clouds108552201Back in 2006, Eric Schmidt of Google said, “What’s interesting [now] is that there is an emergent new model, and you all are here because you are part of that new model. I don’t think people have really understood how big this opportunity really is. It starts with the premise that the data services and architecture should be on servers. We call it cloud computing – they should be in a “cloud” somewhere.” As the term “cloud computing” becomes the norm in most organizations, there are aspects to the technology itself that still need some clarification. Here are 10 more cloud computing terms you’ll be hearing.

  1. PaaS (Platform as a Service) – A model to run applications without the need to maintain the hardware and software infrastructure
  2. IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) — Outsourcing equipment used to support operations, including storage, hardware, servers, and networking components to a service provider who owns the equipment maintains it.
  3. DaaS (Desktop as a Service) — Virtualized version of your physical desktop computer allowing you to access your desktop, applications, etc. from the cloud.
  4. BaaS (Backup as a Service) – Ability for organizations to do backups to the cloud, instead of tapes, disks, or online storage.
  5. Cloudsourcing – Replacing IT jobs with cloud services.
  6. Content Delivery Network (CDN) — Multiple computers forming a large network allowing for data to be shared easily.
  7. Custom Self-Service – Users manage their own services and choose when to terminate.
  8. Vertical Cloud – Optimizing cloud services for a particular industry or application use.
  9. Cloudstorming – Connecting multiple cloud computing environments.
  10. Cloud Portability – Ability to move applications across cloud computing environments regardless of the cloud provider.
