How the Hacker Force is like Duct Tape, Padawans

StarWars88146595BlogGather ‘round my Padawans, master trainer knows that the hacker-chlorians are strong among many of you. As someone who has battled the dark side of the Hacker Force since the Internet’s days of screens-that-are-green, I will share my knowledge of the force.

The Hacker Force is much like the duct tape of our ancient home world. It has a light side, a dark side and it holds the universe together. To understand the battle between light and dark, we must first ask the fundamental question: Why do people hack?

Many of those on the dark side of the force hack for personal gain. Cybercriminal Siths seek to take your identity, your galactic credits, intellectual property or even military secrets for profit on the black market. Hacktivist Siths will illegally take and use information for social and political causes. These Siths also deface sites of knowledge on the galactic Web and deny the use of Internet services.

Fear not. The force balances the Siths with a positive power: Security Jedi Knights. We, warriors for the good side of the force, use the same light sabers or port scanners and the same packet sniffers as the Siths. But, young Padawans, we use these tools to strengthen our shields and prevent intruders from breaching our defensive citadels. Ethical hacker provides you with the tools and techniques used by the practitioners of the dark side in order to counteract them.

Ethical hacking skills are carefully gained through certification and practice. You will have much training in how to aid your leaders, your traders and shopkeepers on how to make the galaxy more secure and functional.

You may notice the “hats” people wear are of many colors. To symbolize our purity, we wear white hats. The cybercriminal wears a black hat. Beware of wearing a hat in shades of gray. You will be enticed to join the dark side as the gray grows darker. Resist this temptation with your faith in the goodness of the Hacker Force.

We are all responsible for protecting the Internet using the Hacker Force. Start with a thirst for knowledge. Use the tools of the intergalactic Web and become proficient at using and programing inference engines. No matter how we came to use the Hacker Force (your master came from studying the processes of life science and alchemy), the force is part of our lives.

From our home world, an ancient general named Sun Tzu shared his wisdom. He said:

If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.

Now, proceed to our Jedi cybersecurity training sessions where we shall start to hone your skills against those who wield the dark side of the Hacker Force. And remember, use the force (and the knowledge) for good and not for evil.
