Between each pair of colons, there are 16 bits that are represented by four hex characters. A group of zeros can be shown with either all four or, the lead zeros can be suppressed. In other words, :000: or :0: mean the same thing. As a short cut in typing, it is legal to replace a group of zeros with two colons (::). This combination is a variable length of zeros and fills the address out to 128 bits, therefore it can only be done once within the address. In this example, check how many of the 16 bit blocks are represented to determine how many zeroes the :: represents…in this case 32.
