Weight was added later in the Cisco code as a value-add for the first step in the decision tree to pick a best path if multiple paths to the same destination appear on the same router. Weight ensures, by default, that a route originated by this router would be preferred over a learned version of the route. Higher weights are preferred and a learned route by default is 0 (zero) and a locally originated route is 32768.
