Responses to the survey showed clearly that earning intermediate and advanced ITIL certifications is valuable to individuals. Of the 117 participants, 76.5 percent indicated that earning ITIL intermediate and advanced certifications made them more marketable compared to others in the job market. This is significant value because of recent economic conditions and the need for individuals to show that they have the credentials and experience that are significantly better than those they’re competing against for limited jobs.

Millions of people all around the world are starting their workday and deciding whether to have one more cup of coffee and whether to even get dressed for the day. Many will have a teleconference from their home office or kitchen. But, there will be some days when they will have to get up, get dressed and travel to their workplace. For years, vSphere has had alarms to let you know when things are above or below thresholds you specify. This is a great first step in identifying items that may require your attention and/or further investigation. The problem is that these thresholds are static; you set a value and are notified if it is above that value, such as CPU utilization > 75%. While useful, it can lead to many false alarms if you have a virtual machine (VM) that routinely exceeds that value or one that spikes to that value for a while during a batch-processing interval.

Enter vCenter Operations Manager (vCOPS). Let the computer do what it does best: monitoring and alerting, figuring out what is “normal,” and then notifying administrators when things are abnormal.

The use of cloud services has skyrocketed primarily because it is cheaper and more convenient than the alternative. Unfortunately, many companies have entered the cloud without first checking the weather forecast or performing a risk analysis. What happens if the cloud gets stormy, you suffer a breach, and you find yourself in the position of having to conduct digital forensics? What now? Can you collect data yourself? Where is your data? Who else has had access to your data? Is the provider the actual data holder or have they subcontracted? Many of these issues are better addressed before you enter the cloud. Failing that, what can you do?
