5 Reasons to Attend Wireshark Event SharkFest’18 ASIA

A-list Wireshark conference premieres in Singapore April 9-11, 2018

Wireshark® is the world’s foremost network protocol analyzer. It lets you see what’s happening on your network at a microscopic level and is the standard across many commercial and non-profit enterprises, government agencies, and educational institutions. Wireshark is an open-source tool, and its development thrives thanks to the active community of volunteer networking, security and wireless experts around the globe.

SharkFest™ is an annual Wireshark Developer and User educational conference that celebrates that burgeoning community. This year hails the premiere of SharkFest’18 ASIA from April 9-11 in Singapore. SharkFest has been drawing packet enthusiasts to the annual event in the U.S. since 2008, and in Europe since 2016.

SharkFest’18 ASIA will be held at the Nanyang Executive Centre, which is located at the Yunnan Garden Campus of Nanyang Technological University. In addition to breakfast and lunch being provided each day, there will be a dinner and reception each evening.

Here are 5 reasons why you should attend the inaugural SharkFest’18 ASIA:

1. Network (pun intended) with other Wireshark aficionados

Security and Networking professionals, and Application Developers who use Wireshark would benefit from attending SharkFest. Considering Wireshark is the de facto open-source standard for packet analysis, and has over 1.5+ million downloads per month globally—that could be a lot of people. Luckily, SharkFest has always been purposefully limited in size so attendees truly have a chance to network with Wireshark experts and enthusiasts.

2. World-class instruction

A key motivation to attend SharkFest is the world-class instruction offered by renowned packet analysts. View the full conference agenda to see all of the available sessions. Learn to more effectively troubleshoot, secure, and optimize the performance of data in an informal environment that promotes knowledge-sharing and network-building.

Wireshark core developers are offering a drop-in, hands-on workshop Monday, April 9 from 1-5 p.m. Attendees receive 1-on-1 instruction in setting up a Wireshark development environment, writing dissectors, tshark, and editcap. This is prime opportunity for Wireshark-enhancement requests.

3. Meet Wireshark project founder Gerald Combs

Gerald Combs, the Ethereal/Wireshark project founder, will be in attendance and deliver the keynote. Many of the core developers will also be attending and presenting. Personally, hobnobbing with these gentlemen has always been my favorite part.

If that isn’t enough, be on the lookout for Laura Chappell and Phill Shade. Laura will be delivering content suitable for Wireshark users at all levels of expertise. She is best known as the founder of Wireshark University. A prolific author, she has written four books and countless publications on Wireshark. Phill is one of Global Knowledge’s instructors. He will be focusing on security.

4. Test your skills in the esPCAPe room

Core developer Sake Blok has designed a virtual escape room where your team competes for prizes and bragging rights. You will be virtually locked into the data center of your employer. The door is blocked and ransom is requested. Fortunately, you have a pcap file with all the network traffic containing a deeply hidden key to open the door. Find the key with your teammates within the hour (before the air conditioning is put to death).

5. Can’t make it to Singapore? Don’t worry, SharkFest’18 US is just around the corner.

If you are unable to attend SharkFest’18 ASIA, consider SharkFest’18 US on June 25-28 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California, just a stone’s throw from Google and Microsoft. Global Knowledge will be well represented by instructors Mike Hammond, Phill Shade, and yours truly, Betty DuBois.
